About

This internship called for someone to aid clients as needed with a designer while assisting in sewing veils. The construction process dealt with re-using vintage parts from wedding dresses, such as lace borders and appliqué, to make new veils. Managing the stock room and organizing merchandise was also a role to execute.

During my stay at this internship, I spent the majority of my time sewing veils. In the end, I got the opportunity to design a veil, expanded my knowledge in re-using old lace or appliqué to make new veils, and refined my hand sewing skills under the supervision of a designer.

Making A Veil

  • Once chosen lace or appliqué have them pinned on the veil.

  • Straighten the veil on a flat surface before sewing.

  • Most veils are sewn using invisible thread with small stitches (about 1/8) apart.

  • Pulling too hard on the thread will create unwanted visible strain and gathering.

Appliqué

Getting Started

  • When cutting out heirloom bits from reused lace or appliqué, cut in a similar pattern otherwise the appliqué will look sloppy.

  • When doing this small clipping scissors are best.

The middle appliqué is not coordinating (left over tulle)

  • Every veil is mirrored when folded. Meaning when folding a veil in half both parts should match.

  • With appliqué, find the matching pieces that will give the mirror symmetry.

Final Thoughts

Work at the start of this internship was a challenge in reference to sewing veils with invisible thread. It was hard to see at first while handling tulle as a delicate base to sew on, but I mastered the technique. Finishing veils properly on a deadline takes time and patience because there are no shortcuts. Through this internship, I was able to execute my work while performing a good work ethic.

Eventually, I refined my hand sewing skills, broadened my knowledge in custom veil construction, and experienced working in a bridal boutique environment.

TikTok

  •  Veiled by ChaCha has gone with the trend of making TikTok videos which I participated in.

  • Before making TikTok videos, we did some research to see what trends are circulating and which ones are coming back such as in wedding dress styles, lace, or veils.
